Open source products include permission to use the source code, design documents, or content of the product…. Use of the term originated with software, but has expanded beyond the software sector to cover other open content and forms of open collaboration.
We’ll create an environment where people will enjoy the teamwork, learning and socializing.
An Interactive museum
The process of building the Cutty Sark 2 will be open to the public.
Where possible, construction processes will be organised as a “performance” with interactive elements; a venue where everyone can see and touch “living“ history and take part; an excellent forum to arouse the attention of the media to international maritime history.
Ship’s design
The ship must not only function as an interactive display but also be suitable for different operational roles – sail-training and cargo transportation.
The goal is to get more people involved by making necessary but time consuming tasks, like drawing the plan, finding accurate measurements and details.
All these details are on the website’s construction wiki pages. People can upload the details, with commenting possibilities and upload the plan.
Architects supervise the plan parts and make the necessary changes and finalizing them. After that, no changes can be done. This plan part is finished, ready to make the part, or download the plan.
- Make the most accurate technical plan of Cutty Sark by the public
- Naval architects supervise the plan
- The plans can be used for building the ship replica and as model plans (huge interest)
- Parts of the ship can be manufactured by third party volunteers. Only smaller parts, the main work should happen in the shipyard.
How to organise work?
There are professionals who responsible for certains parts and processes They will supervise volunteers’ work and finishing documentation and parts.
Volunteers can work in teams on a part. We use Skype, Teamwork and other collaboration softwares.
We use Rhino, Open Source software in making plans.
You can be a volunteer or a professional too. It is up to your knowledge. But in any case you will be part of the history.
Things to do, how to do
- Divide and list the necessary parts for making plans. Full part list, starting with interesting ones, like wheel, wheel house, rope blocks etc. to involve people with easy things.
- Need to get connection (or visitor help) with the original Cutty Sark, to get photos and actual measurements of details.
- Which 3D modelling tools to use. They should be acceptable by manufacturers (Rhino, Corel, Solidworks etc).
- How to pay the volunteers? People work for free in the open source frame, by adding their work and time. But they should get something back in return (credit, share, travel time, their name listed somehow etc).
